The employed physiotherapist, depending on the workplace (hospital, private practice or specialized institution), will either be an expert and relatively specialized therapist, or relatively generalist as a part of the hospital position. Paradoxically, the physiotherapist often chooses the employed over the self-employed status for the freedom it provides :
Physiotherapists also appreciate the employed physiotherapist status for the possibility of working as a team around the same patient.
It is important to specify that employed workers are not subject to the restriction of establishment in “over-dense” zone, imposed by the French Healthcare System.
Thus, pushed by the restriction of the freedom of establishment of self-employed professionals (zoning) on one hand, and by the growing aspiration of physiotherapists for a freer lifestyle on the other hand, a growing number of private practices are starting to offer employed contracts, with the aim of combining the advantages of self-employed physiotherapy with employed status. This type of contract issued by private practices is often financially more attractive than in the public sector.
