Physiotherapy Studies

The professional practice of physiotherapy is regulated by the Public Health Code. Physiotherapists must hold a Diploma of Physiotherapist (called DEMK in France) or a recognized foreign title, and act under medical prescription as part of a decree of acts which defines the scope of massage and medical gymnastics.

In France, the physiotherapy studies are demanding and require technical training, on a background of dense theoretical knowledge, which last 5 years in total.

The Code of Public Health

In order to gain access to the first year of preparatory studies to the state diploma of physiotherapist, students will have to go either through a specific course (PASS), or through the first year of a license with health access (L.AS).

The following four years, divided into 2 cycles of 2 years, take place at the Physiotherapy Training Institute (called IFMK in France), and include :

  • Theoretical and practical training :
    • Lectures;
    • Tutorials.
  • Stages;
  • Personal work.

Obtaining the State Diploma of Physiotherapist (DEMK) allows recognition of a bac +4 level for 5 years of study. The courses and tutorials carried out in IFMK are accompanied by 42 weeks of internship that the student must complete during his training.

Students who have validated the first 7 quarters of training, and who have completed all the tests and internships planned for the validation of the 8th quarter are presented to the regional jury of attribution of DEMK. After proclamation of the results, the candidates who have acquired all the knowledge and skills are declared to have received the State Diploma of Physiotherapist and obtain the corresponding ECTS credits.
